I suggest you check out some of the tutorial's at HeatherM's site.

Also, the picture you posted is pretty small. You'll want a much larger picture to be able to trace a decent shape.

There is a 3D tree svg and a link to a different one in pdf form (I'm assuming it's a vector, but didn't download it) in this post. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7922&p=36426&hilit=christmas+tree#p36426

You might want to take a look and see if either will work for you. HTH

Thanks for all your help. I am going to try making the tree and I think HeatherM's site is great for learning new things.

I took a try at converting your image. Here is how I did it:

I did a trace bitmap with a brightness cutoff around 0.75. I then moved this image off the orginal image to work on it.

Then a broke apart the image (Path/Break Apart) and viewed in outline mode (View/Display Mode/Outline).

Then deleted the inner outline and all the other piece that were not squares anymore. (and the in tree that is the only one upright) That tree one had one area on the right side, that needed to be seperated a bit further by breaking apart the nodes and then recombining... if you need to explain further, let me know)

And then to recreate the slits, I drew a rectangle the width of the slit on top of the original image, then copied it and made longer or shorter for each slit/hole, and extending it beyond the outline of the trees.

THen moved each piece of tree back on top of the orginal image.

I then selected the tree piece and the one rectangle, then did a difference (Path/Difference). For each rectangle you need to do select it and then Path/Difference.

(I am sure there is a quicker way, using the Path/Combine for the rectangles before Path/Differencing, but I didn't think of that until I was done).

OMG.....Thank you Thank you Thank you

It takes a little bit of time to put it together, but when it is together it's so cute and saved me $40 plus if I had to buy it.
